What are Hashtags? The number Symbol (#) used for?

I decided to write this post, because Im sure

all of you have seen it being used in the 

Cyber World aka The Internet.

But not everyone might know what it is, why its used

or how to interpret them.

So Im here to help.

aka Number Symbol

This "#" is called a hashtag.

Here are some helpful words from Twitter, 

where the trend originated from.

Definition: The # symbol, called a hashtag, is used to mark keywords or topics in a Tweet. It was created organically by Twitter users as a way to categorize messages.

Hashtags: Helping you find interesting Tweets

• People use the hashtag symbol # before relevant keywords in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets to show more easily in Twitter Search
• Clicking on a hashtagged word in any message shows you all other Tweets in that category
• Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet
• Hashtagged words that become very popular are often Trending Topics

Example: In the Tweet below, @twitter added the hashtag before the phrase "thankyousteve". The word is now a link to search results for all Tweets containing "#thankyousteve" in the message.

Ok, so even though the trend started on Twitter,

it has over flowed into Facebook, texts,

instant msg and all around communication.

For example:

I wanted to tell a story on Facebook,

that was kinda long for a status

update, so I used hashtags.

Heres what my FB status said,

christian was having a picnic for lunch in the living room, 

and got up to dance to some ACDC, fighter jet video, 

then I hear him freak out.

"AAAHHH! My peanut butter sandwich!!!!"
#Nixon#rolling#hungry

guess the milks not cuttin it... 

See how I used the hashtags there?

(my babys name is Nixon)

To describe the baby, getting into the 

sandwich?
